This event is cosponsored by the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences.

How can we enhance the level of safety of a system that has already been highly safe and reliable? New safety concepts, such as “Safety-II,” in socio-technical systems requiring a higher level of safety, such as nuclear power, aviation, and medical care, will be explained using cases as seen in the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Makoto Takahashi has been a professor in the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University since 2012. His research interests include human–machine interfaces, safety of socio-technical systems, resilience engineering, cognitive engineering, risk communication, and cyber security. Professor Takahashi enjoys trail running, mountain climbing, and bicycling. He is a fan of the music of Eagles, Journey, Styx, Toto, Bruce Springsteen, and Coldplay, as well as the written works of Haruki Murakami, Dan Simmons, Jeffery Deaver, Michael Connelly, and David Halberstam.

This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.
