Why has it become more difficult for recent families to match the levels of wealth seen in previous generations? To answer this question, Daumler uses the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to estimate the total difference in net worth between two cohorts of American adults who started accumulating wealth in the 1980s and the 2000s, respectively. Using a decomposition approach that he developed, Daumler estimates the role of population changes to fertility, marriage, and racial/ethnic inequalities. He concludes by estimating how much of these historical changes are driven by differences in the accumulation of housing wealth and other components of family wealth.
