Counselors, Cops, and the Political Economy of Public Safety in K-12 Schools
Colloquium with Theresa Rocha Beardall
Drawing on five years of ethnographic fieldwork and archival research in Syracuse, New York, Beardall introduces the concept of "the policing contract." She reframes police as public employees and city residents as their municipal employers – and examines how this underexplored relationship shapes police presence in K-12 schools. This research builds a critical labor dimension into the school safety literature and broadens our understanding of schools as carceral spaces.
