Pre-Med LSA Students with Olivia Rivera ‘23 Penn MD: Alum Connection session
Join us for this interactive session in our Grad School Alum Connections series, bringing aMAIZing LSA alums together with students to share their journeys in and beyond grad school. Olivia Rivera graduated from LSA in 2018 with High Honors and Distinction with a major in Neuroscience. She knew she wanted to become a psychiatrist with a public health scope, so she set off on a trio of grad degrees: Master of Law (Penn, ‘19), Master of Public Health, (Harvard ‘22), and her MD (Penn ‘23). She is now a first-year resident psychiatrist at Brigham & Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She is passionate about ending the mass incarceration crisis, and her extensive educational background is in program evaluation and policy recommendations. When she's not in the hospital training to be a correctional psychiatrist, she can be found in various tea shops or cafes in Boston, searching for the perfect Earl Grey.
Join Livia in this virtual session to ask her any and all questions you may have about pursuing an MD and her other degrees. She’s especially excited to connect with BIPOC students to talk through her experience navigating the many experiences in her medical education as a black woman, to help prepare the next generation of med students for the challenges and accomplishments that await them.
You should attend this session if you are:
- An undergraduate U-M LSA student
- Thinking about applying to medical school after you graduate from LSA
- Curious how a successful BIPOC alumna navigated various identity-related challenges in grad programs
- Interested in career paths within healthcare and medicine, and/or with a public health mission
What you’ll gain by attending:
- Make a valuable connection with a successful LSA alum ready to help you navigate the medical school application process
- Get ideas for how to build a career in whatever avenue of medicine you’re thinking about
- Gain tips for presenting yourself in the competitive grad school environment
