Legal Representation of Japanese Companies Doing Business in the United States: The Importance of Cultural Understanding

(FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) Japanese companies do not lose their cultural characteristics when they do business in the United States. General Counsel of Japan-based companies in the United States should understand these cultural aspects when providing legal representation. Similarly, General Counsel should be able to understand and convey to Japanese management the unique aspects of the American legal system.

About the Speaker: Richard O. Briggs received a M.A degree in Japanese Studies from the University of Michigan in 1975 and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in 1977. He has provided legal representation to Japan-based companies doing business in the United States since 1979 and has served as Legal Counsel/General Counsel to Kubota Tractor Corporation (Torrance, California) since 1990.
