In this terrifying moment of banning and restricting access to literature and learning, the English Advisory Board (EAB) at the University of Michigan feels strongly about combatting a culture that devalues the humanities. Our band of passionate former English Majors is delighted to launch a banned book series beginning with “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, a novel about womanhood and patriarchy set in the totalitarian Republic of Gilead, a state in the former United States of America that forces women to serve as concubines for the country’s elite.
The event will unfold online as a mini-lecture with Professor Supriya Nair, a specialist in Women’s Studies, and a discussion moderated by Lynette Clemetson, director of Wallace House Center for Journalists at the University of Michigan.
