In this book talk, Ya-Wen Lei will explore the emergence and features of China’s techno-developmental regime, as well as the contradictions it has engendered.

Ya-Wen Lei is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University and holds affiliations with the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard. With training in both law and sociology, she earned a JSD from Yale Law School and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan (2013). She is the author of "The Contentious Public Sphere: Law, Media, and Authoritarian Rule in China" (Princeton University Press, 2018) and "The Gilded Cage: Techno-State Capitalism in China" (Princeton University Press, 2023). Her work has been published in the "Annual Review of Sociology," "American Sociological Review," "American Journal of Sociology," "Law and Society Review," "Work, Employment and Society, Political Communication," and "The China Quarterly."
