Discussion of Jodi Dean's analysis of recent social movements

This event is the sixth in an ongoing series of open, critical
discussions of socialist approaches to philosophy, history and
society.
The principal reading to be discussed in this session will be "The
Communist Horizon", an essay by Jodi Dean from 2012, which is an
overview of the arguments in her recent book by the same name.
This essay (a 27-page MS Word document) can be downloaded from:
http://www.jdeanicite.typepad.com/files/the-communist-horizon.doc .
However, reading the essay is not essential for coming to the
discussion, as the ideas in the essay will be presented and explained
during the first part of the discussion.

About Jodi Dean:

Jodi Dean is Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William
Smith Colleges and Erasmus Professor of the Humanities in the Faculty
of Philosophy at Erasmus University. She is the author or editor of
nine books. The most recent is _Democracy and Other Neoliberal
Fantasies: Communicative Politics and Left Politics_.

Praise for _The Communist Horizon_:

“This is what everyone engaged in today’s struggles for emancipation
needs: a unique combination of theoretical stringency and a realistic
assessment of our predicament. To anyone who continues to dwell in
illusions about liberal democracy, one should simply say: read Jodi
Dean’s new book!” – Slavoj Žižek

This event is free and open to the public.
