As part of the 2024 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station in northern Michigan, Vera Ting will give a free, public talk at the research and teaching campus along Douglas Lake.

Ting, an illustrator and fine artist with a background in avian biology and ecology, is an Artist in Residence at UMBS this year. The U-M and UMBS alumna was part of a research team at UMBS in 2021 studying avian brain activity during spring migration. Most recently at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, she uses art and storytelling to explore the delicate balance between ecological communities and the impermanence of living things.

Ting's talk is titled “Art and Ecology: The Intersection of Field Exploration and Creative Practice.”

Founded in 1909, UMBS is one of the nation’s largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.

Laboratories and cabins are tucked into more than 10,000 acres along Douglas Lake just south of the Mackinac Bridge to support long-term climate research and education.
