Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM) Seminar: February 6th with David Sandberg, PhD

Please join us for our CBSSM seminar scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at 3-4 pm, NCRC Building 16, Room 266C. David Sandberg, PhD, will present a talk entitled, 'Management Of Disorders Of Sex Development: Is There A Consensus?'

Summary: Disorders of sex development (DSD) are defined as 'congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomic sex is atypical.' Decisions regarding gender assignment and genital surgery are often quickly made under pressure. Former patients and health care advocates complain that parents are provided inadequate information to make decisions, many irreversible, for their DSD-affected child. This presentation will provide an overview of the major controversies in DSD clinical management and the opportunities that exist for developing decision support tools that enhance the decision-making process and outcomes.

Dr. Sandberg is Professor and Director of the Division of Child Behavioral Health in the Department of Pediatrics & Communicable Diseases at the University of Michigan.
