Alcohol may have negative implications for older adults due to age-related physiological changes and medication use that may make even small amounts of alcohol use detrimental. Research on younger couples has revealed that couples who have concordant drinking behaviors (e.g., both drink alcohol) tend to have better quality marriages and are less likely to divorce compared to couples who have discordant drinking behaviors. It is unclear whether these same patterns exist among older couples and whether they have implications for physical health as they grow older together. This talk will discuss findings from our NIAAA-funded project that examined alcohol use and health among couples in the Health and Retirement Study.
