We apologize that we have had to cancel this event.

The transition of Chinese marriage from a patriarchal to a more egalitarian model is well known, but the rise of women’s sexual empowerment within marriage is less so. Using survey data from the 1980s, this presentation examines a key aspect of a woman’s conjugal power, her ability to decline to have sex with her husband.

Bill Lavely is Professor of International Studies and Sociology at the University of Washington and chair of the Taiwan Studies Program. He is a social demographer who has written on Chinese fertility, marriage, mortality, sex ratios, and historical demography. He did graduate work at the University of Michigan Department of Sociology and the Population Studies Center.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at chinese.studies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
