Department Colloquium | War and Academia: The Struggle and Resilience of Ukraine’s Education and Science Sectors
Khrystyna Voitovich and Olha Leshko (Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University)
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has had dire consequences for education in Ukraine. Hundreds of educational and scientific institutions were destroyed or damaged. Millions of pupils, students and thousands of Ukrainian teachers and scientists were forced to change their place of residence within the country or go abroad. In this talk, Dr. Voitovych will delve into the significant challenges faced by universities, including the effects on faculty, students, resources, and the continuity of educational processes. Miss Leshko will offer a personal account of teaching middle and high school students amid these trying circumstances, underscoring the resilience and determination of educators and learners. We will also highlight the collaborative efforts between the USA and
Ukraine to support Ukrainian science during this period.
As part of the "STEM with Ukraine" initiative, we'll discuss key projects such as the online course "Introduction to Quantum Computing," led by Middle Tennessee State University and coordinated by Hanna Terletska, co-founder and USA coordinator, and Dr. Khrystyna Voitovych, coordinator on the Ukrainian side. Additionally, we'll cover student research collaborations, scholar exchange visits, and other cooperative efforts aimed at sustaining and advancing Ukrainian education and science in these challenging times. Finally, we’ll discuss how individuals can contribute to and support the efforts to sustain and rebuild education and science in Ukraine.
