Panelists bios:

Judge Joseph Burke received his BA in 1978 from Michigan State University. He attended Thomas M. Cooley Law School and was awarded his JD in 1982. He has also completed advanced training from the National College of District Attorneys in the areas of computer forensics and the use of technology in courts. Judge Burke has lived and worked in Ann Arbor his entire legal career. From 1982 to 1986 he was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Washtenaw County Prosecutor William F. Delhey. In 1986, he entered private practice at the long-established law firm of Burke & Rennell, P.C. In 1993, he returned to the Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorneys Office when Prosecutor Brian L. Mackie appointed him Chief Assistant, the position he held until March 2012 when he left to join the 15th Judicial District Court bench. He was appointed to the 15th Judicial District Court bench by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2012. Judge Burke has served several local non-profit organizations as a board member, including Neighborhood Senior Services, Humane Society Of Huron Valley (past president), the Washtenaw Council on Alcoholism (past president) and Dawn Farm. He is the current president of the Washtenaw Community Concert Band.

Thuy Dao earned a BS in Social Work from Kansas State University (1994). Prior to attending law school, she worked for the Kansas Department of Social & Rehabilitation Services investigating child abuse cases. She earned her JD from Washburn Law School (1998) and served for 3 years as Assistant County Counselor for Shawnee County, Kansas. In this position, she played a role in handling all civil law matters for the County, such as employment matters, fiscal issues, property tax appeals, contract reviews etc. Currently, Ms. Dao is the Assistant District Counsel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District. Her primary duties are to advise agency staff on all aspects of civil works projects and regulatory matters. Civil works projects include dredging the navigable waters of the U.S. so that navigation is maintained; completing projects that will reduce damage to lives and property from floods; and constructing water/sewer projects. Regulatory matters include reviewing, prosecuting and defending our agency's decision on permitting work under the River & Harbors Act and Clean Water Act

Angela Povilaitis is currently an Assistant Attorney General in the Michigan Department of Attorney General, Criminal Division. Ms. Povilaitis is tasked with prosecuting violence against women criminal cases throughout the State of Michigan and with developing a Statewide Cold Case Sexual Assault Project, the first of its kind in the country to focus on cold case sexual assaults at a statewide level. Prior to joining the Michigan Attorney GeneralÕs Office, Ms. Povilaitis served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Wayne County ProsecutorÕs Office for eleven years where she focused primarily on the prosecution of child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, child homicide, domestic violence homicide, and other serious felony cases. Ms. Povilaitis is a 2000 Wayne State University Law School graduate and a 1997 graduate of the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science & Arts, where she majored in Political Science. As a U of M undergraduate, Ms. Povilaitis served as a PSIP summer intern for Michigan Senator Carl Levin during the summer of 1996.

Miles Schultz earned his BA from Simpson College (2005) majoring in philosophy and music. He completed his JD (2008) at the University of Iowa as part of a joint degree program in which he also earned a MS in Urban and Regional Planning (2009). He began his legal career as a paralegal working at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In September 2012 he was promoted to Trial Attorney for the EOCC. Mr. Schultz passed the bar in both Iowa and Michigan.
