Hem's music is calm, dreamy, elegant, and exquisitely bittersweet. "This Brooklyn quartet, says the Washington Post, "plays sophisticated, subtle orch-pop that just happens to have a twang." The group forges a lush, poignant sound capped by the incredible voice of Sally Ellyson, a serene yet aching instrument. Nobody seems to know quite how to classify Hem: country, alterna-folk, Americana, and chamber folk are a few of the terms that have been tried out. The problem comes up because this band is something completely new and different! Hem is coming to town with a new album, "Departure & Farewell." Here's the enchanting video from its leadoff track, "Tourniquet."
