University of Michigan Herbarium Workshop: Using digital plant collections to teach biodiversity science in your classroom

Date: Friday and Saturday, November 15-16 2024

Location: 3600 Varsity Drive

Time: Workshop runs from 9:00am to 3:30pm each day. Please arrive at least 15 min early to allow for check in.

Workshop Goals: This 2-day in-person workshop at the University of Michigan Herbarium in Ann Arbor, MI will introduce participants to using digital plant collections from Michigan and beyond to explore biodiversity. Natural History specimen digitization is stimulating a revolution in the biodiversity sciences and has the potential to transform learning in the classroom. Teachers will be guided through activities and provided instructions and accompanying presentations that can be used in the classroom by teachers to enhance STEM learning by students in collections-oriented science. The presentations and activities focus on three major topical areas: biodiversity, collections, and digitization. Also included is a tour of the research museums of the University of Michigan Herbarium and the Museum of Zoology. This workshop is part of the NSF funded TCN: Bringing Asia to Digital Life and will be led by Chuck Davis (Harvard University) and Brad Ruhfel (University of Michigan) and other presenters.

To Qualify: Currently employed as a middle school or high school biology or environmental science teachers, and individuals enrolled in a teacher education program.

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs): This workshop will qualify for 10 SCECHs.

Cost: There is no cost to attend.

Maximum Enrollment: 20 people.

Honorarium: All participants will receive a $150 honorarium for completing the course.

Application Deadline: Friday October 25th, 2024. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Friday November 1st, 2024.

Food: A light breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Dinner on Friday evening is on your own.

Lodging: Coming Soon! Funding may be available for participants traveling form outside the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Area.

Parking: Free to Participants. Permits will be used Friday morning November 15th. No permit necessary on Saturday.
