Chapter Workshop with Ashley McDermott_Language Accomodation in Bishkek_Central Asian Studies RIW
On November 12, from 4:00-5:20pm in Tisch 1014, the Central Asian Studies RIW will workshop a chapter draft by Ashley McDermott, a PhD Candidate in Linguistic Anthropology, whose work focuses on the relationship between Russian and Kyrgyz inside modern-day Bishkek.
Ashley has provided the following description of the piece that will be workshopped:
This content chapter will further develop my MA thesis work on "accommodation" in Bishkek families, exploring the tension between the "traditional" expectation that children accommodate to elders, and the "gentle parenting"-inspired belief that adults should accommodate to the language children know best. I show how children in quotidian interactions make conversational moves to negotiate between these types of accommodation, actively influencing Family Language Policy toward Russian.
Food and refreshments will be provided. If you have food allergies or preferences please email Albert Cavallaro (albertca@umich.edu) so we can accommodate to your needs when putting in food orders. The workshop paper will be made available on November 4th roughly one week prior to the scheduled workshop. If you have any questions about this event please email Albert (also please email Albert if you are interested in worshiping a dissertation chapter or potential article with the Central Asian Studies RIW in the future!).
