Premodern Colloquium | "The Higa and the Tlachialoni: Material Cultures of Seeing in the Mediterratlantic,"

Byron Hamann

We hope you will join us on Tuesday, November 12th at 1:00 PM when Byron Hamann engages us in conversation about his article, "The Higa and the Tlachialoni: Material Cultures of Seeing in the Mediterratlantic," (Art History, 2018). In it, Dr. Hamann uses an image from the Codex Magliabecchiano - a mid sixteenth-century pictorial manuscript created by Indigenous artists in central Mexico, then the center of Spanish power in the Americas - to explore the entanglement of ideas about vision and its effects that originated both in precontact Mexico and the Mediterranean world.
