Undergraduate Seminar: Constructing Rings of Fractions

Max Natonson

When rigorously working with rational numbers, we define them as equivalence classes of pairs of integers. A similar construction works to give us an analogous "field of fractions" for arbitrary integral domains. We can further generalize this concept to any ring, leading us to the idea of localization. We will go through this construction together, and examine how we can utilize this field of fractions to learn more about our original ring.
