In-person event only

When does mobility stop and rootedness emerge? When does the empire reach its limits? This presentation examines the friction of knowledge circulation in Qing China, with a focus on the court’s failed attempts to decipher and deploy a Miao arrow poison known as sa.

Chang Xu is an assistant professor of Asian Studies at Rice University. Her research interests cover the global history of medicine, the history of military science and technologies, and the interconnections between human and non-human bodies. She is working on her first book, “Medicine on the March: Military Institutions, Medical Networks, and the Qing Empire, 1644-1800.” It offers a social, cultural, and institutional history of medical practices in garrisons during the period of Qing territorial expansion.
