Harada’s second inquiry into Japanese history centers on the famous Shinsengumi at the end of the Tokugawa Era in the 19th century. Baragaki: Unbroken Samurai depicts the life of Hijikata Toshizō, a rural commoner who mastered martial arts and became a leader of the Shinsengumi, a militia in Kyoto deployed by the Tokugawa. The film depicts his early days as a young man learning swordsmanship all the way to his final battles against the winds of change. With the fall of the Tokugawa and the return of the Emperor, Japan left feudalism for the modern nation-state system.
