Center for Emerging Democracies Roundtable | After 2024: Elections & Democracy
2024 was described as a “super year” for elections. But for many people in many places, it didn’t feel like a “super year” for democracy. This roundtable takes stock of what we learned from a year when a whopping 4 billion people – half the world’s population, from America to India to Mexico to South Africa – had the opportunity to vote. Are elections mostly fulfilling their democratic promise, or increasingly ushering authoritarian politicians into power? And what beyond elections is most urgently needed to strengthen global democracy in the years to come?
