Emperor in August (日本のいちばん長い日), the final film of Harada’s historical cycle, is an adaptation of Hando Kazutoshi’s celebrated book about the final days of World War II from April to August 1945. This is the critical period leading up to Japan's surrender, including the wrenching island warfare in the Pacific, the strategic bombing of Japan with napalm, and the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Harada depicts the intrigue surrounding the emperor, as some actors within the government advocate for surrender while others desperately push for a fight to the end. This complex history, along with the sensitive depiction of Hirohito, rendered the depiction of this episode in Japanese history particularly fraught.

Presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Read more about the film, including ratings, at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4289340/
