Film Screening: New Wave

University of Michigan Museum of Art

The U-M Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs presents a screening of the award winning documentary film New Wave (1 hr, 28 min), a coming-of-age story about young Vietnamese American teen refugees who were pioneering a musical phenomenon known as 1980's new wave.

Filmmaker, Elizabeth AI, delves into the joy and youthful defiance of this time, along with exploring the painful and difficult lives of her own refugee family and icons of the new wave scene. It is an emotional journey, unraveling mysteries that touch on cultural identity, generational trauma, and the Vietnam War's lasting impact. This film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is a poignant marker of 2025 being the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

Free and open to the public, no tickets required.
