Michigan Notable Books Author Tim Wendel: Summer of '68

Tim Wendel, writer in residence at Johns Hopkins University, discusses Summer of ’68: The Season That Changed Baseball, and America, Forever. This 2013 Michigan Notable Book recounts a time marked by assassinations and political protests and a baseball season that rallied the people of riot-torn Detroit and captivated a divided nation.

In 1968, our country was rocked by tragedy and sweeping change. It was the year when Dr. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated and protests escalated into fiery demonstrations in Chicago. But even as tensions boiled over, something remarkable was happening in ballparks across the nation, especially in St. Louis and Detroit. In his book, Tim Wendel takes us on a wild ride through a time when sports, especially the national pastime, stepped to the forefront.

Followed by a book sale and signing courtesy of Nicola's Books.

The 2013 Michigan Notable Books program and tour are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Humanities Council, Meijer, and the Michigan Center for the Book. Media Sponsors are Mittenlit.com, City Pulse, WKAR, Dome, Queue Advertising and Tom Gennara Photography.
