Are you interested in a career in medicine? LSA alum Dr. Tyler Barrett joins us to help you think about choosing a healthcare career and how to align personal interests and passions with different healthcare professions. He’ll also share his experience and insights on what it means to be a physician these days and how he finds long-term career enjoyment in the field. If you’re looking for a medicine-adjacent career, Dr. Barrett will also offer expertise and learnings into the areas of administration, research, publishing, and private consulting.



About Dr. Tyler Barrett

Dr. Tyler W. Barrett is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Associate Chief Medical Officer for Compliance at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has held leadership roles in quality, patient safety, and clinical operations. His research focuses on opioid use disorder, non-opioid analgesia, and atrial fibrillation management, with over 100 publications and NIH/NHLBI K23 funding.

A Fellow of ACEP and the Heart Rhythm Society, Dr. Barrett earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan, a medical degree from Vanderbilt and completed his residency at LAC+USC and Harbor-UCLA. He mentors over 40 trainees and serves as Senior Associate Editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine. He is Chair of Vanderbilt’s Faculty Senate (2025–2026) and a team physician for the Nashville Predators. Dr. Barrett is active in opioid education and developing programs for USA Hockey and local educators.
