The talk unpacks how the centuries-old Tibetan institution of Dalai Lama reincarnation is being recast as a focal point of twenty-first-century geopolitics. Drawing on history, international law, and lived Tibetan experience, Dr. Lobsang Sangay will examine Beijing’s bid to control the succession process, the broader questions about its implications for religious freedom and regional security, and the rules-based international order.
Dr. Lobsang Sangay is the former Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration, having served two terms from 2011 to 2021. A graduate of Harvard Law School, where he earned his SJD, and currently serves as a lecturer at Harvard Law School. Dr. Sangay is a leading expert on Sino-Tibetan relations, exile governance, and democracy. He has testified before the US Congress, addressed international bodies including the United Nations, and is widely published on Tibet, democracy, and international law. He is co-editing a book on the Institution of the Dalai Lama and Geopolitics of Reincarnation.
