Indigenous, Native American, and Pacific Studies RIW, Introductory meeting

By way of introduction, our names are jessie neal (CHamoru) and Lopaka O'Connor (haole and sunburnt), and we're your inaugural organizers/co-conveners for the Indigenous, Native American, and Pacific Studies RIW (or INAPS, since UM needs another acronym). We're inviting you, or anyone you know that might be interested, to our introductory session on Friday, September 19, 12 pm, in Haven 3512.The goal for the session is pretty straightforward: meet you all, eat some food, and collectively plan what to do with the rest of the semester. In that spirit, if you're interested in coming, please take a few minutes to fill out this brief Google Form: https://forms.gle/auTUf7umVgxBwegYATo give you a sense of where we're thinking of going this semester (conditional and revisable with community feedback), some of the workshop’s themes and topic areas include Indigenous knowledges, languages, and research methodologies; comparative studies of Indigeneity and colonialism; and the pedagogy of bringing Indigenous Studies into the classroom. INAPS is the inaugural forum at the University of Michigan for interdisciplinary collaboration on Native American and Pacific Islands Studies, and the only forum on campus with a specific focus on the Pacific region. To orient ourselves for the next year, we're reading Epeli Hau'ofa's "Our Sea of Islands" and Eve Tuck's "Suspending Damage" for us to reflect upon, and briefly discuss at the upcoming meeting.
