The Knowledge Seekers Series: Power of Myth in Our Lives
OLLI Study Group (50+)
Class meets Mondays, September 16 - October 21.
We will examine the views of Joseph Campbell, an anthropologist, and Elizabeth Vandiver, a classicist. The class will involve a combination of "The Power of Myth", conversations with Bill Moyers (PBS DVD Series); and a Teaching Company DVD course, "Classical Mythology", from Elizabeth Vandiver. The DVD viewings will be integrated with discussion. Campbell combines insights of psychology with comparative mythology to explain the power of myth; Vandiver gives insight into the key characters and stories of Greek and Roman mythology to explain its power. In exploring their ideas, we learn how myths affect our own lives. Dr. Richard Galant studied classical Greek and Latin for many years.
