Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman and the Poetry of Democracy
OLLI Study Group (50+)
Class meets Wednesdays, September 25 - October 30.
Thoreau, Emerson and Whitman transformed American thought. Their essays and poetry looked to a democratic future that rejected the Puritan tradition and expanded the concept of Jacksonian equalitarianism. Transcendentalism and the impulses towards radical equalitarianism in mid- nineteenth century America presaged a new vision of the idea of democratic practice. Taught by Larry Berlin.
Church of the Good Shepherd, 2145 Independence Blvd. $35.
