Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kelly McCaleb, completed her 10th grade high school year in Costa Rica as part of an American Field Service exchange. She earned B.A. from the University of Michigan in Political Science and Comparative French and Spanish Literature, and spent her junior year studying in Nantes, France. After college, McCaleb worked as a Legal Assistant at an immigration law firm, and continued on to earn a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. During law school, she spent a semester studying at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. She is admitted to practice law in Georgia and the District of Columbia.

Before joining the Foreign Service in 2010, McCaleb worked as a contract attorney specializing in foreign language legal research and translation. She began her career with the State Department working as a Staff Assistant in the Bureau of Political Military Affairs, and is currently serving as Consular Section Chief in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Her follow-on assignment is a Staff Assistant position in Islamabad, Pakistan.
