Mary Lewis, professor of history, Harvard University.

Mary Lewis is professor of history at Harvard University. Her current research interests center around the international and imperial history of France, the history of rights, and the connections between international relations and everyday local life. Her first book, The Boundaries of the Republic: Migrant Rights and the Limits of Universalism in France, 1918-1940 (Stanford University Press, 2007), was a winner of the 2008 James Willard Hurst Prize awarded by the Law and Society Association for the best book in socio-legal history. It was translated into French by Editions Agone in 2010. Her new book, Divided Rule: Sovereignty and Empire in French Tunisia, 1881-1938, was just released by the University of California Press; her talk will draw from the themes covered in this book.
