rXn is a Chinese American co-ed dance group, under the Chinese Student Association, that showcases the unique bridge between cultures through self-choreographed dances in both traditional and modern styles. Our show this year is based on Avatar: the Last Airbender, a series that has been quintessential for many Asian Americans. For much of our community, Avatar was a rare moment in childhood media that allowed us to identify with heroes rather than side-characters or stereotypes. The world-building, cultural practices, and morals draw heavily from Asian cultures, allowing Asian Americans to see elements of themselves reflected with depth, strength, and respect. In addition to representation, whether it is between elements, responsibilities, and identities, Avatar explores the idea of balance. Similar to the lives of many Asian American students, we are forced to navigate through keeping a careful balance between being American and staying connected to our cultural heritage. Through our choreography and storytelling, we aim to translate this ambiguity, but also the community being Asian American. Beyond performance, our event serves as a space for learning and artistic expression, where diverse narratives can be recognized, celebrated, and shared with the wider campus community.
