Celebrating 40 years in radio and 50 years of performing!

In 2026, longtime radio host and folk music advocate Matt Watroba celebrates an extraordinary milestone: 40 years behind the microphone. Known for his warm presence, deep musical knowledge, and unwavering support of artists, Watroba has become a cornerstone of Michigan’s folk and roots music scene.

From the beginning of his radio career in 1986 at Detroit public radio, WDET, to his current work on Michigan State public radio, WKAR, Watroba has dedicated himself to sharing traditional and contemporary folk music with audiences across the region. Over the decades, his programs have introduced countless listeners to emerging and established artists, while preserving the storytelling traditions that define the genre.

“Radio has always been about connection,” said Watroba. “Connecting people to music, to stories, and to each other. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to spend 40 years doing something I love, in a community that values and supports it.”

In addition to his work on the air, Watroba is widely recognized for his contributions as a concert performer, community sing leader, and educator. He has played a key role in fostering Michigan’s vibrant folk community, helping to create spaces where artists and audiences come together in meaningful ways.

Colleagues and listeners alike praise Watroba for his authenticity and passion. “Matt doesn’t just play music—he lives it,” said a longtime collaborator. “His voice is part of the fabric of this community.”
