From Chalkboards to Chatbots: Situating GenAI in Education

A split composition contrasts two educational scenes. On the left, a black-and-white photo shows a young child standing at a chalkboard, reaching up to write among handwritten words and numbers in a classroom setting in the 1940s. On the right, an AI-generated image of a modern, full-color scene with a child seated at a desk using a desktop computer, smiling and engaged with a brightly colored animated character displayed on the screen. How is generative AI impacting learning and teaching? This kickoff event launches the GenAI & Human Learning Workgroup at the Eileen Lappin Weiser Center for the Learning Sciences and begins a year-long inquiry into how generative AI is shaping our understanding of human learning and implications for teaching.

The event will feature remarks by Dr. Bob Bain, situating generative AI within the broader history of educational technology, followed by facilitated small- and large-group dialogue. Questions, critiques, and emerging ideas are welcome. Food will be provided. Please register to help with planning.

About the Organizers:
The GenAI & Human Learning Workgroup engages the U-M community—including students, faculty, staff, and community partners—in shared inquiry and collaborative experimentation around GenAI in education through events and microlearning opportunities over the next year.

Workgroup Members: Drs. Bob Bain, Liz Kolb, Lin Li, Jamaal Matthews, Kevin Miller, Chris Quintana, Rebecca Quintana, and Jared Ten Brink.

Please take our brief survey! Your input will inform future events and programming.
