Gifts of Art presents Indian Classical Music
U-M Visiting Artist Rajeeb Chakraborty
Musician, educator, composer and conductor Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty was 9 years old when he first began performing. His first music teacher was his father, Pandit Rabi Chakraborty, himself a distinguished sarodist. He studied sarod (a lutelike stringed instrument of classical Indian music), voice, taal (rhythm), laya (tempo), and many more aspects of music under highly esteemed teachers. In addition to being a scholar in Indian classical music, Dr. Chakraborty earned degrees in Western classical music from Royal College of Music (London) with distinction. Chakraborty has been a guest composer/conductor for the Leeds Summer Festival and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He is presently serving a 2013 fall semester residency at U-M, and this concert is in partnership with the U-M Center for World Performance and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Listen now.
