Canonical models of democracy expect working-class people to be the main beneficiaries -- even the natural beneficiaries -- of democratization. Yet not all democratic systems deliver economic gains to average citizens. Even after they gain the right to vote, very rarely do they become candidates for office and get to serve as the people's representatives. When is "democracy against workers" and how might we make it work better for working people? In this Democracy Week roundtable, Nick Carnes, Adam Dean, and Noam Lupu discuss their book projects on these themes, with Ann Heffernan serving as respondent.
