Steven Payne, a distinguished member of the technical staff at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, will deliver the Glenn Knoll Lecture on laser technology for inertial confinement fusion and the advances needed to make inertial fusion energy possible. Drawing on a career spanning materials science, solid-state physics, lasers, and radiation detectors, Payne will discuss the National Ignition Facility’s achievement of fusion ignition and the interdisciplinary challenges involved in translating that milestone toward future energy production. Established through an endowment from Gladys Hetzner Knoll, the Glenn Knoll Lecture Series honors the legacy of U-M Professor Emeritus Glenn F. Knoll and his pioneering contributions to nuclear measurements.
