The Two Faces of Mark Twain: Humor and Tragedy--OLLI at U-M (50+)
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at U-M
Speaker: Lawrence I. Berkove, Ph.D. Emeritus Professor of English Literature, University of Michigan-Dearborn
Mark Twain is rightly considered one of the greatest humorists of all time. In recent years however, because of more sophisticated ways of reading his literature and because of attention given to less well-known, newly available, and hitherto unpublished manuscripts, he has also become known as an outspoken social critic and as a tragedian. How these widely different positions can be reconciled by an understanding of his art and values will be the subject of this discussion. Former president of the Mark Twain Circle of America, and the author, co-author, and editor of essays, books, and monographs on Twain, Dr. Berkove's most recent book is “Heretical Fictions: Religion in the literature of Mark Twain.”
