Political Humor in Gilbert and Sullivan--OLLI at U-M (50+)
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at U-M
The University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society The University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society is the oldest student-run society in the nation dedicated to performing the delightful operettas of Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Gilbert and Sullivan were renowned for their clever plots, catchy music, witty characters, and their political satire. No one in the British realm was spared, not even Queen Victoria herself. What is remarkable about the jokes made at the expense of the political system is that they still can be found humorous in today’s society. G & S members will present and discuss some examples of these works.
