Hsu is director of U-M’s Surveys of Consumers, which tracks key economic indicators, such as consumer sentiment and expectations. Her research focuses on household finance, labor economics, public economics and survey methods, with particular emphasis on financial decision-making, consumer debt and financial literacy. Hsu serves on the American Economic Association’s Committee on Economic Statistics, is associate chair of its Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession and is a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Academic Advisory Council. Before joining the university, she was a principal economist at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, where she worked on the Survey of Consumer Finances and economic forecasting. Hsu earned her doctorate in economics from the University of Michigan, and her undergraduate degree from Brown University.
