The Premodern Colloquium presents visiting scholar Matylda Urjasz-Raczko for our first event of the 2026-2027 academic year. On Tuesday, October 6th, Matylda will give a presentation which examines the figure of Bona Sforza of Aragon (1494-1557), Queen of Poland, Grand Duchess of Lithuania, Princess of Bari, Rssano in the Kingdom of Naples, and heir to the Duchy of Mila and the Kingdom of Jerusalen. It is thought not as a gender biography. Her figure and life serve as a case study to illustrate the processes taking place in the Mediterranean world and in northern and eastern Europe in the time just before the Habsburg domination in the mid-16th century. The focus is therefore on the time and places where Bona came to rule. It serves as a lens that focuses various problems related to the formation of a new balance of power and a shape of the future Europe.
