From SPAM to Jell-O, cream of mushroom soup casserole to pineapple upside-down cake, the 20th century saw a radical reinvention of food systems across the country. This is the story of how the domestic scientists, with a dash of military tech and Madison Avenue, revolutionized the world, one home kitchen at a time.

This lecture will take place on Thursday, October 8th, from 5:00pm - 6:00pm, in the Vandenberg Room, located on the second floor of the Michigan League.

Bio: Diana Hubbell is a two-time James Beard Award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience covering food, culture, and travel. Currently, she runs the travel section at SAVEUR.
Previously, she was an editor at Atlas Obscura, where she wrote stories about an island full of very unusual feral pigs, a utopian hippie cult, and the long, weird history of Jell-O meat salads.

You'll also find her bylines in The Guardian, The Washington Post, Condé Nast Traveler, WIRED, The Independent, VICE, Architectural Digest, Eater, Esquire, AFAR, Popular Science, Wine Enthusiast, Travel + Leisure, Off Assignment, and Playboy, among other publications.

She lives in Brooklyn, but has called Berlin and Bangkok home. She has an MA from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism's Arts & Culture program and a BA from Wesleyan University's College of Letters.

This fall Diana Hubbell is the DeRoy-Graf Memorial Visiting Professor in the LSA Honors Program at the University of Michigan.
