Astronomy Colloquium | “One step closer to planet formation”
Dr. Antonio Garufi
Over the past decade, ALMA and VLT/SPHERE have unveiled a diverse range of
planet-forming disk morphologies, the connection of which to planet formation remains only
partially understood. Rings, gaps, spirals, warps, vortices, and asymmetries are now
commonly observed and are often interpreted as signatures of planet-disk interactions. Yet,
protoplanets embedded in disks remain very elusive, and ALMA is unable to probe dust
grains approaching centimeter sizes, a critical stage in the process of planet formation. In this
talk, I review our progresses in understanding the planet formation, and investigate the
potential of ELT and SKA to address the main challenges.
