Program Description: Denmark is consistently ranked among the happiest countries in the world and is known for its universal healthcare system, tuition-free education from kindergarten through graduate school, and open prison system. In this course, we will use a sociological lens to compare and contrast the education, public health, and criminal legal systems in the United States and Denmark. During our three weeks abroad, we will examine the causes and consequences of racism, socioeconomic disparities, and other social inequalities within the Copenhagen community. By immersing yourself in Danish culture, you will learn about the country's unique norms, values, and policies, and how they differ from American ways of living. Through visits to community organizations, conversations with guest speakers, and cultural excursions, you will gain firsthand insight into Danish society. By engaging in ongoing reflection and active learning, you will develop a greater awareness of your social identities within a global context, deepen your understanding of your own worldview, and consider your role as an agent of social change. Together, we will explore both the possibilities and challenges of applying Danish models of social welfare to create a more just and equitable society in the United States.
