The Drama and Performance Interest Group brings together performers from theatre, dance, visual art, and music with scholars from fields as varied as dance studies, ethnomusicology, history, American studies, literary studies, art history, classics, and anthropology. We foster critical inquiry into the historical, social, and political dimensions of global drama and performance. The Drama and Performance Interest group conceives of performance broadly and considers it to be an essential human expression. Last year, we added ‘critical dance studies’ to our definition of performance. There is no theatre graduate program at U-M, nor is there a graduate program in critical dance studies, thus the Interest Group expands beyond current degree programs and departments to create space for cross-departmental, interdisciplinary collaboration for graduate students interested in drama and performance, broadly defined.
