EEB Thursday Seminar Series (Hubbell Lecture) - Variable barriers to gene flow across a field cricket hybrid zone
Erica Larson, University of Denver
Seminar Summary - Field crickets (Gryllus) in North America were once considered a single “exceedingly plastic species” adapted to local environmental conditions. There are now more than 35 recognized species of North American field cricket and perhaps many more cryptic undescribed species. With a landmark paper in 1979 titled “Speciation in North American Field Crickets”, Richard Harrison launched decades of classic studies focused on a single hybrid zone between two closely related species of North American field cricket. In this seminar, I will revisit hypotheses laid out in the classic paper and describe ongoing work to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among North American Gryllus and identify new hybrid zones in this species complex. I will discuss the natural history of Gryllus and the incredible opportunities for integrative and comparative evolutionary research in this group.
