Student Success Workshop: Dealing with Difficult Research Topics
Research can invite us to engage with complex, sensitive, and emotionally demanding topics—including sexual violence, discrimination, trauma, and the experiences of vulnerable or historically marginalized communities. While this work can be meaningful, it can also affect researchers in ways they may not anticipate. In this interactive, student-centered workshop, you’ll explore how to approach difficult research topics with care—for yourself, your research partners, and the communities connected to your work. Through reflection, discussion, and realistic scenarios, you’ll learn practical strategies for recognizing emotional strain, establishing healthy boundaries, communicating sensitively, and seeking support when needed. The workshop will also introduce principles for engaging ethically and respectfully with people’s lived experiences while avoiding assumptions, harm, or extractive research practices. Whether you are already working with a difficult topic or simply want to be better prepared, this session will offer a supportive space to ask questions, build skills, and identify resources. You do not need to share personal experiences or details about your research to participate.
