The Care, Repatriation, & Restitution of African Cultural Property
The care, repatriation, & restitution of African cultural property remain matters of cultural, economic, geopolitical, institutional, legal, and spiritual importance.
This virtual conversation will bring together perspectives from African art and museum practice, cultural policy, creative practice, digital heritage, and African-led restitution initiatives. Co-moderators antonio c. cuyler and Ashley Miller will guide a dialogue with participants from Nyamakop, Open Restitution Africa, and related fields.
Panelists will consider how museums and other institutions should understand their responsibilities to African communities; how restitution, repatriation, repair, and reparative justice differ; and what durable, accountable collaboration between institutions in the Global Norths and Africa might require.
The program will conclude with moderated audience Q&A.
