Ensemble PHASE is a collective of musicians dedicated to experimental music that brings traditional Korean instruments into dialogue with diverse musical languages. Since its founding in 2017, the ensemble has performed internationally, released three albums, and commissioned and premiered nearly 50 new works in collaboration with leading artists from Korea and around the world.

For this special performance, Ensemble PHASE presents a program inspired by the life and legacy of Ilhan New, the Korean American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and University of Michigan alumnus. Through innovative musical interpretations, the performance explores the intersections of Korean and American experiences, offering a fresh artistic perspective on New’s remarkable life and enduring legacy.

Program Overview
This two-part program traces two defining periods in the life of Dr. Ilhan New: his early years in the United States after leaving Korea as a child, and his return to Korea, where he devoted himself to business, philanthropy, and the cause of Korean independence.

Part I: Life in America — Traditional Korean Music
Through a selection of traditional Korean music, the first half of the program reflects on New’s journey from his childhood in Korea to his experiences building a life in America. Each piece evokes a chapter of his personal story, from memories of his homeland and the voyage across the Pacific to the challenges of adapting to an unfamiliar culture, the perseverance required to pursue his education, and the beginning of a lifelong partnership with his wife.

Part II: Return to Korea — Contemporary Compositions
The second half explores New’s return to Korea and the lasting impact of his work through contemporary compositions by composers Edward Schocker, Dana Kaufman, and Hyoshin Na. These works reflect on his entrepreneurial vision, the tragedy of Korea’s division, and his commitment to the nation’s independence. The program concludes with The Twenty Million by Edward Schocker, a world premiere honoring New’s enduring legacy and his vision of dedicating his fortune to the advancement of future generations through education.

Bringing traditional Korean music into dialogue with newly composed works, Ensemble PHASE offers an artistic portrait of a remarkable Korean American life shaped by migration, perseverance, service, and an enduring commitment to his homeland.
